A world model is a technology that lets AI predict and simulate how the real world works, all inside its own head. Just like a person can picture how a ball will fly after being thrown, AI uses this to predict what's likely to happen next. It's used to run training and safety simulations for self-driving cars, and researchers are also using it to help AI anticipate what's happening around it.

Behind the Name

"World Model" combines the words "World" and "Model" — literally, a model that recreates the world inside your head. The name refers to the blueprint or internal mechanism AI uses to simulate the real world's physical laws and rules entirely within itself.

A world model is a technology that lets AI learn the physical rules and mechanics of the real world, then recreate that behavior inside its own head.
Just as we intuitively understand everyday physics — tip a cup and water spills out, drop something and it falls to the floor — a world model is AI's mental model for predicting and understanding the laws of the world.

Put simply, it's like AI carrying around its own virtual simulator. But this kind of simulator works differently from the traditional kind, where engineers hand-code physical laws and 3D models piece by piece. A world model learns from huge amounts of video and data, which lets AI predict — probabilistically — what's likely to happen or appear next, and generate virtual scenes on its own.
This means AI can test out "what would happen if I did this" inside its head before actually acting in the real world. That makes it possible to learn efficiently while avoiding costly, dangerous mistakes.

This technology has a wide range of applications — from generative tech that lets AI create entire video or game worlds, to self-driving cars and robot control.
In self-driving, for example, alongside traditional simulators where humans manually build 3D spaces and traffic rules, there's growing work using virtual driving scenes that AI generates from real driving data, for training and safety evaluation. Researchers are also working on predicting how nearby cars and pedestrians are likely to move next.
It's a foundational technology that lets AI understand and navigate complex real-world environments on its own.
