Workslop

workslop

Passing off empty, AI-generated work products onto your colleagues

In Simple Terms

Workslop shows up as work products from colleagues that were left entirely to AI and lack real substance. For example, you might receive a long, hollow report an AI generated automatically, and end up having to rewrite it yourself from scratch. Other examples include incomplete code written by AI, or long, unfocused emails that never get to the point. At first glance, it can look like progress is being made, but in reality, it just shifts the burden onto whoever receives it.

Behind the Name

Workslop is a coined term that combines "work" with "slop," meaning something of poor quality. It was introduced by researchers in a workplace study. The term was inspired by "AI slop," a phrase used for low-quality content found online, but it was created specifically to describe a problem happening in the workplace.

Take a Closer Look!

Workslop refers to low-quality, AI-generated work products shared within a workplace.
The concept was proposed by researchers at BetterUp Labs and Stanford University, and unlike ordinary internet spam, it specifically focuses on "workplace productivity and trust."

The biggest problem is that reports or emails hastily thrown together with AI end up pushing extra costs, like "checking" and "fixing," onto the colleagues who receive them.
One study estimates that dealing with these hollow AI-generated deliverables costs the recipient an average of about two hours per item.

Put simply, even though the sender thinks they're saving effort by using AI, that saved effort just turns into a "hidden cost" that the people around them end up paying instead.
Over time, this doesn't just lower the organization's overall efficiency — it can also damage trust within the team, leading to attitudes like "I can't trust the materials that person sends me."
While it's fine to use AI for convenience, this term is a reminder that people still need to take responsibility for finishing the work and respect the time of whoever they're handing it to.
