Older phones needed a dedicated line just for calls, but thanks to internet-based services like these, you can now make voice calls from anywhere you have an internet connection.

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol — carrying your voice over the same set of rules computers use to talk to each other online. As the name suggests, it connects calls using the internet's own networking system instead of traditional phone lines.

VoIP is a technology that turns your voice into digital data and delivers it to the other person using IP, a set of networking rules.
Traditional phones carried voice over dedicated phone lines and switching equipment, but VoIP breaks voice into small data packets and sends them over an IP network instead.
Here's the basic idea: your voice gets chopped into tiny pieces, packed into packets, and sent one after another across the IP network to the other side.
The moment they arrive, those packets are reassembled back into sound almost instantly, and the person on the other end hears it through their speaker.
VoIP calling services generally fall into three categories, depending on the network path and setup they use.
1) Landline-style VoIP services, such as fiber-optic phone lines — these run over a private network managed by the carrier, so they support emergency calls, including calls to 110, and guarantee call quality.
2) VoIP phone numbers starting with "050" — these come with a real phone number, but the call itself travels over your internet connection.
3) App-based calls, like LINE calls or video conferencing tools — these skip phone numbers entirely and connect people through their app accounts over the internet.
The big advantage of VoIP is that it can carry voice efficiently over an IP network without needing a dedicated phone line at all.
On the other hand, calls that travel over the open internet — like "050" VoIP numbers or app calls — can sometimes get choppy or delayed if the network is congested.
