Voice Cloning

Voice Cloning

A technology that uses AI to accurately replicate a specific person's speaking style and vocal qualities.

In Simple Terms

Voice cloning uses AI trained on a person's voice to read any text aloud in a voice that sounds just like them. The AI learns from pre-recorded voice samples and picks up on their unique vocal traits. It can recreate a voice from just a short clip, and the more data it learns from, the more natural the result sounds. It's used to let someone "read" a book aloud in their own voice, or have a character speak with someone's voice — all without ever needing a recording studio session.

Behind the Name

The name "voice cloning" combines "voice" with "clone", a term borrowed from biology that describes making a copy of a living thing. Here, the AI closely mimics a specific person's voice pitch and speaking style to create a new "digital voice" — hence the name.

Take a Closer Look!

Voice cloning is a technology that teaches an AI to remember a specific person's voice, so it can speak new words in a way that sounds just like them.

Put simply, it's a system for creating a digital "copy" of someone's voice. In the past, recording someone's voice meant going to a studio and spending a long time on the session.
But with voice cloning, an AI can learn a person's vocal characteristics from just a few dozen seconds to a few minutes of recorded audio, then generate speech that sounds like them. The more recording data it has to work with, the more speech habits and vocal nuances the AI can pick up, making the final result sound more natural and accurate.

This technology is used in a variety of situations — for example, in systems that let people who may lose the ability to speak due to illness record and save their voice in advance, so it can still be used in conversations later on. It's also used in games, where AI can have a character speak new lines in a voice that sounds just like the original voice actor's, without the actor needing to record new sessions.
On the other hand, there are risks people worry about too: celebrities' voices being used without permission to fabricate statements they never made and spread them online, or scammers using a voice that sounds just like a family member to call someone and trick them into transferring money.
Because of this, work is underway on both laws to prevent someone's voice from being used without their permission, and technology to help detect fake AI-generated voices.
