System Prompt

System Prompt

A preset instruction that defines an AI's role and response rules before it starts answering.

In Simple Terms

A system prompt is an instruction that sets an AI's role and rules in advance, before it starts answering. For example, you can tell the AI beforehand to "act as a professional translator" or "answer in simple terms a child could understand, without jargon." This way, the AI can consistently follow the same persona and rules without the user having to repeat instructions every time.

Behind the Name

The name combines two words: "system", meaning the underlying structure or framework that keeps something running, and "prompt", meaning an instruction given to an AI. Put together, they describe the foundational instruction that shapes how the AI behaves before it begins responding.

Take a Closer Look!

A system prompt is an instruction set up in advance, before you send any question or request to a generative AI, to define its character and the rules it should follow.
Put simply, it's the foundational instruction that gives the AI a role—"who you are"—and a framework for "what form your answers should take."

Using one helps keep the AI's tone and quality of answers consistent.
Without it, the AI might respond with a different tone every time, but if the system prompt specifies "you are a kind teacher," the AI is more likely to respond with gentle, encouraging language.
You can also set rules like "answer in English" or "give a broad summary," nudging the AI toward the kind of answers you want.

In this way, system prompts are widely used as a mechanism for controlling AI behavior when building AI-powered systems and services.
Unlike the regular questions a user types directly to the AI, a system prompt is typically set up behind the scenes by the developer, ahead of time.
