A component that packs all the key functions of a smartphone and similar devices onto a single chip

A SoC is a single chip that combines many of the components needed to run a computer. Inside a smartphone, key functions — such as the CPU (which handles computation), the GPU (which processes graphics), and circuits for communication and security — are all integrated into one chip. Packing everything onto one chip shortens the connections between components, making data transfer faster. SoCs are widely used in everyday devices like iPhones and Android smartphones.

Behind the Name

SoC stands for System on a Chip. 'System' refers to the overall framework, and 'on a Chip' means on a single chip — so the name literally means 'a system built on a single chip.' Just as the name suggests, it refers to packing components that were once separate parts tightly onto one small silicon chip.
