Smart Home
Smart Home
A home whose appliances and equipment are internet-connected and can be controlled remotely, such as from a smartphone.
In Simple Terms
A smart home is a home where appliances and equipment are connected to the internet, letting you control them remotely or have them run automatically. For example, you can use a smartphone app to turn on the air conditioner before you get home, or set the lights to turn on automatically once it gets dark. It's also used for home security, such as sending a smartphone alert if a window sensor detects something unusual while you're away.
Behind the Name
The name simply combines "smart" and "home" - it's called this because the house behaves in all sorts of ways almost as if it had a clever brain of its own.
Take a Closer Look!
A smart home is a home where the appliances and housing equipment inside are connected to the internet so they can all be controlled together.
Put simply, it means the whole house is online.
Traditional appliances each needed their own dedicated remote control, but with a smart home, you can operate many different appliances from a single screen or with just your voice, through a smartphone app or a voice assistant.
You can also link multiple devices together - for example, setting things up so that when you wake up in the morning, the curtains open automatically and the TV and air conditioner switch on.
Because appliances can work together and react automatically like this, a smart home can also automatically adjust things like room temperature and brightness.
And if you install an electronic "smart lock" at your front door, you can check its locked or unlocked status remotely, which helps prevent you from accidentally leaving it unlocked.
