Subscriber Identity Module Card

An IC card that smartphones and tablets use to read carrier subscription details and connect to calls and the Internet.

In Simple Terms

A SIM card is a small card you insert into a smartphone to enable calls and Internet access. It stores your phone number and subscriber data, which the phone reads to connect to the network. Carriers issue one when you sign up for a contract, and you can just swap it into a new phone to keep the same phone number.

Behind the Name

SIM stands for "Subscriber Identity Module" — Subscriber meaning the person with the contract, Identity meaning who they are, and Module meaning a small component. So the name basically describes exactly what it does: a small card that identifies who holds the communication contract.

A SIM card is an IC card you insert into a smartphone, tablet, or similar device to connect it to a mobile network.
It stores a unique identifier (such as an IMSI) that carriers use to recognize which subscriber's device is trying to connect — that's its core job.

Basically, it works like proof that you've signed a contract with a carrier.
When you insert a SIM card into a device, its contract details get checked against the carrier's network as the device communicates with a cell tower, and that's what grants access to calls and data.
SIM cards come in a few different sizes, and the smallest one, called nano-SIM, is the most widely used today.

There's also eSIM, which skips the physical card entirely and writes the contract data directly onto a chip built into the device.
It's handy for switching to a local carrier while traveling abroad, or running two phone numbers on a single phone.
