Roaming is a system that lets you connect using another carrier's network, even in places where your own carrier's signal doesn't reach. For example, it's used when you travel abroad and connect to the internet through a local carrier's network while still using your phone from home. It's also used domestically, automatically borrowing another carrier's signal in remote areas like mountains where your own carrier hasn't built coverage.

It comes from the English word "roam," meaning to wander or travel around without a fixed path. The name reflects how your phone can wander away from its home network and still stay connected somewhere else. In Japan, "international roaming," which lets your phone connect to a local carrier's network while you're traveling abroad, is well known.
