RFID is a technology that uses radio waves to exchange tag information wirelessly, without any physical contact. One type can read tags from several meters away and scan multiple tags at once, which makes it handy for checking out multiple items at once at self-checkout registers, or for checking inventory in a warehouse. There's also a short-range type, like the kind used in cards, where you hold the tag close to a reader to communicate — different systems are used depending on the job at hand.

RFID is an automatic identification technology that uses radio waves to exchange data recorded on a tag, all without physical contact.
It works through wireless communication between a dedicated tag attached to a product or item and a reader device, exchanging an ID and other details without any contact needed. Tag memory comes in a few types too — read-only, write-once, and rewritable tags that can be updated again and again.
One notable feature of RFID is that it comes in several different varieties, each with its own range and mechanism.
For example, the UHF band type can reach several meters and doesn't require holding each item up one at a time the way a barcode scanner does — it can read multiple tags at once, even while the products are still packed inside a box. This makes it a great fit for checking out multiple items at once at store registers or for tracking inventory in a warehouse.
Then there's the short-range type used in contactless transit cards, which communicates by being held close to a reader. This type relies on NFC, the standard for near-field communication, and FeliCa — a technology widely used in contactless transit cards — is actually one of the standards that falls under the NFC umbrella.
Both types belong to the RFID family, but by using different ranges and mechanisms suited to the task at hand, RFID helps automate business operations and make everyday life more convenient.
