A technology that identifies what objects appear in an image or video and where each one is located.

Object Detection is a technology where AI automatically figures out what's shown in an image or video and exactly where it's located. It's used when self-driving cars track the real-time positions of pedestrians and road signs, or when security camera footage is scanned to locate people and bags. It's also put to work counting specific items among a large batch of products in a photo.

Behind the Name

The name comes straight from what it does: an "object" is anything with a distinct physical shape, and "detection" means finding and identifying it within a scene. What makes the name fitting is that it doesn't stop at recognizing what's present — it also pinpoints exactly where each object sits in the frame.

Object Detection is an AI technology that identifies not just "what" appears in an image or video, but also "where" it is. Instead of simply labeling an entire photo as "a picture of a dog," it pinpoints exactly where each dog, cat, or car sits in the frame, usually by drawing a box around it.

The way it works is that the AI is trained beforehand on a huge number of images, learning to pick out the distinguishing features of objects. Because it can work out what's in camera footage and where, it's also put to use in safety checks and surveillance. Put simply, if image classification labels an entire image as a whole, Object Detection goes further by finding each individual object within the image along with its position.

Real-world uses include self-driving systems that track nearby vehicles and pedestrians, and automatic checkout systems that count products at a store register. It's also applied across many other fields, from spotting defective items on a factory line to detecting abnormalities in medical images.
