Motion capture is a technology that records the real movements of people or objects and turns them into digital data. Markers or sensors are attached to the body, or cameras are used, to track movement. The collected motion data is used to bring 3D animation and game characters to life with realistic movement. It's also used by VTubers, whose avatars move in sync with the performer's actual movements during a livestream.

Behind the Name

The name comes from combining "Motion", meaning movement, and "Capture", meaning to catch or record. Together, it literally means "capturing movement" — which is exactly what this technology does. It's also sometimes shortened to "MoCap".

There are two main approaches. One attaches special markers to the body and films them with specialized cameras; the other uses sensors worn on the body to measure changes in angle and position.
There's also a method that doesn't require any special equipment on the body at all — AI automatically detects a person's skeleton from ordinary camera footage and generates motion data from it.

This technology is widely used to give characters natural movement in the 3D graphics for movies, animation, and games.
It's also used to sync a streamer's real movements with their avatar's movements, as with VTubers.

Beyond entertainment, it's also valuable in sports, where it's used to analyze an athlete's form and movement habits, and in healthcare, where it's used to quantify walking patterns for rehabilitation.
By turning real-world movement into accurate data, this technology helps recreate human motion across a wide range of fields.
