Marketing Funnel

Marketing Funnel

A diagram showing the journey from first learning about a product to purchasing it, shaped like a funnel.

In Simple Terms

A marketing funnel is a diagram that breaks down the journey from a customer first learning about a product to actually buying it, stage by stage. Businesses use this diagram to figure out which stage a customer is currently at, so they can plan the right information or service to offer them.

Behind the Name

The name combines "marketing" — the practice of delivering a product's or service's value to customers — with "funnel." Picture how the number of people who know about a product, then get interested, then actually buy narrows at each stage — that gradual narrowing traces the same funnel shape, wide at the top and narrow at the bottom.

Take a Closer Look!

A marketing funnel is a diagram that clearly breaks down the process consumers go through, from first becoming aware of a product or service to actually buying it.
Broadly speaking, it's often divided into four stages: Awareness, Interest, Consideration, and Purchase.
It's really useful for companies that want to tailor their approach to how a customer's mindset is changing, or to figure out where in the process a lot of customers are dropping off.

For example, a company might post on social media to boost Awareness, then offer a free trial to people stuck at the Consideration stage — turning the funnel into a concrete game plan.
An extended version of this idea is also widely used, one that goes beyond the purchase itself to include turning customers into enthusiastic fans who spread the word to others on their own.
