Layer 2
Layer 2
A system that processes transactions outside the main blockchain to reduce congestion and fees.
In Simple Terms
Layer 2 is a system that handles transaction processing outside the main blockchain. As more people use a blockchain, it can become slower and more expensive to use. Layer 2 takes on most of that processing outside the main network and works together with it, easing overall congestion and enabling fast transactions.
Behind the Name
The name simply combines "layer" with the number 2. It's called this because it works as the "second layer" sitting on top of the base network, known as Layer 1. Since this outer layer takes on processing to relieve congestion on Layer 1, it's also commonly called "L2."
Take a Closer Look!
Layer 2 is a technology used to boost the processing capacity of blockchains, like those used for cryptocurrency.
Transactions themselves are processed outside the main network, but their security and finality are still backed by that main network.
The underlying main network is called Layer 1, and Layer 2 functions as an extension layer that works on top of it.
Main blockchains are highly secure, but they can struggle to keep up when transactions pour in from all over the world at once.
Layer 2 handles transaction processing and computation outside the main network, then has Layer 1 verify that the results are correct — this way, it still benefits from Layer 1's secure foundation.
Even though processing happens elsewhere, the job of securing transactions stays with Layer 1.
This is what sets Layer 2 apart from a different technology called a "sidechain," which handles both processing and security through its own independent mechanism.
Think of it like setting up a dedicated sorting area in front of a crowded checkout counter: things get processed there first, and the results are then properly recorded in the main counter's ledger.
This approach shortens the time it takes for transactions to complete and helps keep fees lower for each one.
It's used on networks like Ethereum as a way to ease exactly these kinds of challenges.
