Jitter refers to the variation in the timing of when data arrives over the internet. It's used as a measure of connection quality in situations that need real-time data exchange, like online gaming, video conferencing, and voice calls. When the intervals between data arrivals become irregular, it can cause audio to cut out or video to freeze. It's an important factor in judging how stable a connection is.

Behind the Name

The term comes from the English word "jitter", which means to shake or vibrate slightly. It's used to describe how, because of unevenness in the time data takes to reach its destination over a network, the intervals between data seem to shake or fluctuate. It's also known by other names, like "fluctuation" or "delay variation".

Jitter is the variation in the time it takes for data sent over a network to reach its destination.
When you send data over the internet, it gets broken up into small chunks before being transmitted.
Because of things like congestion along the network path, each chunk can arrive a little earlier or later than expected, and that variation is what's called jitter.

Think of it like buses that all leave on a fixed schedule, but arrive at different times because of traffic congestion along the route.
When jitter is high, the intervals between arriving data become irregular: sometimes there's a gap, and sometimes a bunch of data arrives all at once.
This has an especially big impact on real-time communication, like voice calls and online gaming.

To smooth this out, a mechanism called a buffer is sometimes used: it temporarily holds incoming data, evens out the arrival intervals, and plays it back at a steady pace.
Improving the performance of network equipment and connections can also help make data arrival times more stable.
Keeping jitter low is a key part of creating a comfortable, reliable connection.
