Generative AI

Generative Artificial Intelligence

A type of AI that creates new content — text, images, and music — by learning patterns from existing data.

In Simple Terms

Generative AI is technology that can create brand-new text or illustrations simply from human instructions. For example, it powers conversational chat services that answer questions, as well as tools that generate images from text prompts. It can produce a detailed illustration that looks hand-drawn in seconds, or write a natural-sounding story based on the patterns it has learned.

Behind the Name

The name comes from "generative," which means "having the power to produce or create." Earlier AI systems mainly classified existing data — like identifying a cat in a photo — while Generative AI learns patterns from large datasets to produce entirely new content: text, images, and more.

Take a Closer Look!

Generative AI is a type of AI that automatically produces new content based on patterns learned from large amounts of data.

Traditional AI systems were primarily designed to analyze existing data — for example, looking at a photo and identifying it as a cat, or predicting sales figures from historical records.
Generative AI stands out because it can produce things that didn't previously exist: text, images, audio, programming code, and more.

To put it simply, Generative AI works by learning patterns from massive datasets and using those patterns to generate plausible new content.
A text-generating AI predicts and chains together the most likely next words, while an image-generating AI gradually refines a noisy starting point into a coherent picture — producing results that resemble human-created work.

It can be applied across a wide range of areas, from writing assistance and design support to programming help.
That said, it can sometimes produce convincing-sounding errors, and questions around copyright still call for clearer rules to be established — so it's important to use it thoughtfully.
