Facial recognition works by capturing the features of your face as data using a camera, then comparing that data against previously registered records or an ID you're carrying to verify your identity. It's used for things like unlocking your smartphone screen or passing through airport immigration gates.

Behind the Name

Research into digitizing and comparing facial features has been underway since the 1960s. Its applications have since expanded to include identity checks by law enforcement and everyday uses like unlocking a smartphone.

Facial recognition (also called face recognition) uses a computer to analyze facial features captured by a camera to verify or identify a person. It generally falls into two types: one-to-one authentication and one-to-many identification (also called face identification).

One-to-one authentication narrows the comparison down to one specific person in advance, then checks for a match. Unlocking a smartphone works this way, comparing your face against the owner's data stored on the device. Airport facial recognition gates also use one-to-one matching against the photo on the e-passport you're carrying, so no advance registration is needed.

One-to-many identification searches a large database of registered faces to identify who's in front of the camera. It's used in things like office entry systems, where employees are identified just by standing in front of a camera, without showing a badge.

The way a device reads your face varies. Some systems project light to capture the face's 3D shape, requiring a dedicated depth sensor (Face ID on the iPhone works this way); others simply compare flat 2D images, and spoof-resistance depends on which method is used. Either way, the core idea is the same: facial features are converted into data and compared against registered data to confirm identity.

There's no key or card to carry around, so there's nothing to lose, and no PIN to memorize either. That makes it a convenient, hassle-free method used in many settings.
