Data Mesh

Data Mesh

A design philosophy where each department manages its own data, making it easy to share and use company-wide.

In Simple Terms

Data Mesh is a system where, instead of gathering a company's data into one central place, each department manages its own data while sharing it with others. For example, the sales and engineering departments each manage their data in a format that works well for them, while also making it available to other departments on request. This makes it possible to quickly get the data you need and use it for analysis.

Behind the Name

The name "Data Mesh" combines "data" with "mesh" — a term for a network of interconnected nodes, like a net or web. The name evokes each department's data being woven together like a mesh, so the whole company can freely draw on it, rather than everything being collected into one central hub. It captures the idea of connecting data in a distributed way instead of centralizing it.

Take a Closer Look!

Data Mesh is a design philosophy that distributes the authority and responsibility for managing data to the departments that create and own it.
Instead of the traditional approach where a dedicated IT department gathers all of a company's data into one place, the teams that generate the data take the lead in managing it themselves.

Broadly speaking, its defining feature is treating each department's data as a "product" it provides.
For example, the sales department guarantees the quality of the sales data it produces — treating it as a "sales data product" — and publishes it in a format other departments can easily use.
Because the team that understands the data best is the one managing it, this keeps data quality high.

It also helps prevent a common problem: management being concentrated in a dedicated IT department, leaving other teams waiting to get the data they need.
By having each department take the lead in publishing its own data, other departments that need it can fetch it directly, making data use across the whole company much smoother.
