Dark Mode

Dark Mode

A display setting that uses a dark background (such as black) and shows text in light colors

In Simple Terms

Dark Mode is a feature on smartphones and computers that makes the screen background dark and displays text in light colors. It's widely used to reduce eye strain and glare when looking at a screen at night or in a dim environment. On some types of smartphone displays, it can also help save power and extend battery life. You can even set it to switch on automatically based on the time of day.

Behind the Name

Dark Mode "Dark" means dim or without light, and "Mode" refers to a particular setting or state — put those two English words together and you get the name for this feature! It's also known as Dark Theme or, in some apps, Night Mode.

Take a Closer Look!

Dark Mode is a feature that switches the display on smartphones and computers to a darker color scheme.
Instead of the usual white background with black text, the screen shows white text on a black or dark gray background.

With the overall brightness turned down, it's much easier on your eyes when using your device at night or in a dim room.
On some displays, the screen doesn't need to light up the black areas at all, which can reduce power consumption and help the battery last longer.

Think of it like dimming the main overhead lights in a room and switching to soft, indirect lighting that gently illuminates just what's right in front of you.
Some smartphones also let you set Dark Mode to turn on automatically at certain times of day.

In this way, Dark Mode isn't just about changing how things look — it also serves real purposes like reducing eye strain and extending battery life.
That's why apps and websites sometimes include an option to switch between display modes as well.
