CTR is a number that shows how often an ad gets clicked when it's displayed. For example, if an ad is shown 100 times and clicked once, the CTR is 1%. It's commonly used to measure the effectiveness of website ads, social media ads, and email newsletters. The higher this number, the more likely the ad or content is to capture readers' interest.

Behind the Name

CTR stands for Click-Through Rate — combining Click (to click), Through (to pass all the way through), and Rate (ratio). It measures what percentage of people who see an ad or link on the internet actually "click" on it and "pass through" to the next page. It is also commonly written out in full as "click-through rate."

CTR, or Click-Through Rate, is a metric that shows what percentage of times an ad or link on a website gets clicked out of the total number of times it is displayed.

This value is calculated using a simple formula: number of clicks ÷ number of impressions. For example, if a web ad is displayed 1,000 times and clicked 10 times, the CTR is 1%. It's an important piece of data for understanding how many people actually took action compared to the total number of times the content was shown.

Checking CTR lets you gauge how well an ad's design or copy is capturing people's interest. If an ad has many impressions but a low CTR, it may mean that the visuals or messaging aren't resonating with the target audience.
