Color Gamut

The range of colors a display or printer can reproduce.

Color gamut refers to the range of colors that can be reproduced on a screen or in print. Smartphone displays and the monitors used for illustration work each support a different range of colors. A device with a wider color gamut can display more vivid, deeper colors on screen. It's used in design and photo editing to check that colors look accurate.

Behind the Name

The word "gamut" means "the entire range" of something. It's used here to describe the full range of colors that a device like a display or printer is able to reproduce — hence "color gamut."

Color gamut is the range of colors that a display, printer, or other device can reproduce.
It shows how much of the full range of colors visible to the human eye a given device or piece of data is capable of representing.

There are standard RGB specifications for screens and digital data.
For example, "sRGB" is widely used for websites and general-purpose monitors, while "Adobe RGB" covers a wider range of colors and is common in photo editing.

Printers, on the other hand, create color by layering ink, so their gamut has a different shape from that of a screen.
For both screens and printers, each device's gamut data is recorded and managed using a shared system called an ICC profile.

Because of this, illustrators and photographers choose monitors with a gamut suited to their work, and before printing, they check how the finished colors will look on screen and apply the right color conversion.
Put simply, it's a way of describing how wide a range of color variation a device can reproduce.
