App
Application
Software designed to run on smartphones or computers for a specific purpose
In Simple Terms
An app is software built to accomplish a specific purpose on a smartphone, tablet, or computer. There are several types: "mobile apps" that you install on a phone or tablet, "web apps" that run in an internet browser, and "desktop apps" designed for computers. Among all the different kinds of software out there, the ones you interact with directly to do specific tasks — like writing a document or editing a photo — are what we call apps. When you download something from an app store, you're typically downloading a mobile app.
Behind the Name
"App" is short for "Application." It originally referred to "application software" — programs designed to help you perform specific tasks on a computer — and over time the shorter word "app" became the everyday term.
