AI (Artificial Intelligence)

Artificial Intelligence

Technology that uses computers to reproduce human intellectual functions such as learning, recognition, and reasoning.

In Simple Terms

AI is computer technology that delivers "intelligent functions"—the ability to learn and make decisions much like a human does. For example, when your phone replies as you speak to it, or an app tells you the name of a flower you photographed, that's AI technology at work. By using large amounts of data to grow smarter and solve complex problems, AI helps us in our everyday lives.

Behind the Name

"AI" is short for "Artificial Intelligence." "Artificial" means man-made or human-created, and "Intelligence" means the capacity to think and reason. The name comes from the effort to artificially recreate, on a computer, the kind of intelligence that humans possess.

Take a Closer Look!

AI is a broad term for technology that gets computers to perform the kinds of intelligent behavior humans are capable of—such as seeing, hearing, speaking, and thinking.

Some early AI systems relied on humans to program in explicit rules, but later on, machine learning—which learns from data—and especially deep learning produced major results across many fields and became one of the leading approaches.
Machine learning refers to methods that find patterns in data and learn regularities from experience.

As the technology advanced further, a method called deep learning—inspired by how the brain's neural circuits work—emerged, and AI's performance improved dramatically in many areas, including image recognition and natural language processing.
As a result, AI can now handle complex tasks that were once difficult—such as recognizing what appears in an image or conversing in natural language—with high accuracy.

AI is used everywhere in our lives and work—from translation apps, self-driving cars, and robot vacuums to generative AI, which creates brand-new text and images.
