AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)

Artificial General Intelligence

An AI that can understand and solve a wide range of problems like a human, not limited to specific tasks.

In Simple Terms

AGI is an AI that can think independently and solve all kinds of problems — not just excel at one thing, but tackle challenges the same way a human would. Today's AI systems are limited in the range of tasks they can handle and how flexibly they adapt, but AGI would be able to learn and apply knowledge even to problems it has never seen before — that's the key difference.

Behind the Name

AGI stands for Artificial, General, and Intelligence. The name captures the idea of intelligence that can handle a wide range of challenges like a human — not confined to any one specific task.

Take a Closer Look!

AGI refers to AI that possesses broad intelligence like a human and can handle a wide variety of challenges.

The AI systems we use every day — like translation tools and image generators — are specialized for specific domains. Some AI can handle multiple tasks such as text and images, but they are fundamentally good at the tasks they were trained on. Just like you can't ask a chess-champion AI how to make curry and expect a useful answer, most AI today struggles outside its designated area.

If AGI were achieved, it would be able to think through brand-new problems on its own, learn, and find solutions — even without a predefined set of rules. The key difference is that it could learn from experience and apply that knowledge flexibly, just like a human. For example, it could help discover new treatments for unknown diseases or work out solutions to complex environmental problems, bringing breakthroughs across all kinds of fields.

Some tech companies and research institutions are actively pursuing AGI as a major goal. At the same time, serious debates are underway about what it would mean if an AI with human-level or greater capabilities came into existence — including questions about the future of human work and whether such a system could be kept safely under control.
