Agentic Commerce

Agentic Commerce

A system where AI searches for and buys products on a user's behalf, following their instructions and conditions.

In Simple Terms

Agentic commerce is a setup where AI acts as your representative, shopping for you on its own. Just say something like "buy this for me," and the AI will find something that matches what you want and take care of the purchase from start to finish.

Behind the Name

"Agentic" comes from "agent" plus "-ic," the adjective-forming suffix meaning "relating to" or "characterized by." In AI, an "agent" acts independently within its environment, so "agentic" carries that sense of independent action. "Commerce" means trade or business. Together, the name describes trade carried out by an independently acting system — exactly what this does.

Take a Closer Look!

Agentic commerce is a system where AI acts on a person's behalf, handling the shopping process for them. Unlike traditional online shopping, where a person picks out and buys items themselves, the defining feature here is that AI does the thinking and decision-making.

Simply put, it's a form of online shopping where an AI assistant handles things for you. In the past, you'd have to look at your phone screen, search for a product, and tap the payment button yourself. With this system, though, you just share your budget and preferences, and the AI searches for matching products and handles the ordering process. How much human confirmation is built in varies by system — some designs have you approve the final order before payment goes through, while others let the AI complete the purchase on its own, within a budget and set of conditions you've approved in advance.

In practice, this shows up in systems that predict when everyday supplies are about to run out and reorder them automatically — comparing brands, prices, and sellers within conditions you've pre-approved — or that compare and propose travel plans based on conditions you've set, and even complete the booking. On the seller side, businesses are also starting to experiment with presenting their products in ways that appeal to AI agents, not just to human shoppers browsing ads.
