Account

Account

A personal membership that lets you access and use a web service or app.

In Simple Terms

An account is your own personal membership that you register for to use a web service or app. For example, when you use social media or an online store, you first register your name and email address to create an account. The ID and password combination you need to log in are also managed as part of your account.

Behind the Name

In English, "account" can mean a bank account or a calculation. Just like a bank account, it refers to a dedicated place for managing your own money or information — that's why the term came to be used in the digital world too. Online, it refers to your own personal "membership right" to use a service.

Take a Closer Look!

An account is your own personal right to use a specific website or app.
It's easy to picture as a kind of "membership card" that proves who you are online, or your own personal "room" within a service.

Creating an account lets you have your own dedicated page within a service and save your past activity and data.
For example, managing your own posts on social media, skipping address entry on shopping sites, or picking up a game right where you left off are all things an account makes possible.

Simply put, an account is protected by a set of an "ID" and a "password".
Your ID works like your name online, while your password acts as a secret key that only you know.
Combining these two to "log in" proves that you're the rightful owner of the account, making it possible to use the service safely.
